Both boys ran fantastic times. In a race of over 100, Séan came in at 24, just shy of qualifying for the Munster Championships. Jake followed soon after in a place of 50, also just missing out on qualifying. Overall, a brilliant race ran on a very tough course!

CBS Mitchelstown History makers claim first Munster Senior B football title

A first-ever Munster Senior B football title was garnered in style by Mitchelstown CBS at Ballyagran on Saturday last.  Three times the school has reached the provincial decider in this grade and lost out, including an agonising defeat last year to eventual All-Ireland runners-up Abbey (Tipperary). On this occasion though they were not to be denied, dominating the game to emerge 10 point winners over St. Michael’s Listowel.

Efficiency and work rate were the dominant themes throughout for the CBS boys.  Their first 8 shots of the game yielded 8 points, while a blistering opening 8 minutes in the second half saw them shoot 6 unanswered points from 6 efforts to move the game beyond the reach of their Kerry opponents.  Listowel worked hard to stay in contact and enjoyed their best spell of the game in the last 10-15 minutes of the first half.  This brought them to within 3 points of CBS at one point, and indeed they could consider themselves unlucky not to have scored a goal during that period also, with Callum Burke and his defenders combining to deny them.  Two points before the break from Cory Buckley, immense throughout, restored the CBS advantage to 5 at the half-time whistle.

Given the outstanding return from the opening salvos of the second half, there might have been an expectation that the Mitchelstown boys could not keep up the momentum.  This was not the case however.  Listowel were not allowed any easy ball from defence out, with everyone from corner forwards Kevin Cotter and Cian English to corner backs Eoghan Geary and Oisin Hanrahan defending tigerishly. With Conor Walsh moving out from his full forward berth and Cathal English continuing his masterful display in midfield, Listowel found it increasingly difficult to claim their own kick-outs and while the scoring conversion rate dipped a little from the Mitchelstown boys they still maintained their grip on the game. Ben Carey was unlucky not to goal, as was Cian English, but that reward did arrive eventually through Cian Ryan. Listowel added 1-02 late on, no more than their efforts deserved, to leave the final score Mitchelstown CBS 1-20: St. Michael’sListowel 1-10. Next up for the team will be the All-Ireland semi-final, likely to be played the weekend of Feb. 24th.
