Transition Year

This is a specially designed programme of study for students who have completed their Junior Certificate. It is an optional programme for students in Mitchelstown CBS.

Transition Year is a one-year programme that enables students to make the transition from junior cycle to senior cycle. It encourages personal and social development and recognises the need for students to grow in independence. It also prepares the students for adult and working life.

The benefits of the programme are evident in our students who have grown in maturity and self-confidence, have developed learning skills and study skills and who have explored the working world through work experience and developed entrepreneurial skills through their mini-company

The programme is reviewed annually. The Transition Year timetable currently includes:

Work Experience, offered in two blocks of two weeks each, is a central part of the programme.

The school also offers courses delivered by external qualified and experienced instructors. These currently include:

  • First Aid
  • Law day
  • GAA Coaching course
  • FAI coaching course
  • Leadership programme
  • Road safety
  • Basic Food Hygiene
  • Munster Computer Programming
  • Prep-for-Med course

Transition Year pupils are encouraged to participate in Gaisce – the President’s Award – which involves personal goal setting in four different areas.

Pupils in Transition Year also participate in competition in drama, poetry, debating and mini-company, culminating in an-end-of-year trip abroad.
