Mitchelstown CBS welcomed two World Champions back to the school recently, following exploits at the highest levels in karate and handball. Third year student John O’Donoghue represented the Kildorrery club at the S.K.D.U.N. World Karate Championships in Milan, and returned as World Champion in the Kumite U-16 competition. John was successful in his seven fights against competitors from countries including Azerbaijan, Latvia, Romania and Switzerland. He faced an opponent from Azerbaijan in the final, but coped admirably with the pressure of his first World final to land the winning blow. This completed a remarkable double for John’s family as his younger brother Eugene had won a World title an hour earlier in the U-12 age group. John is now looking forward to the next finals in Serbia in 2013.

In recent weeks the senior hurling team at Mitchelstown CBS have been training extremely hard for the quarter final of the Munster schools senior hurling competition after comfortably overcoming Glanmire Community School in the previous round.

Uniforms were put to one side last Tuesday as students participated in a non-uniform day. Organised by the LCA 2 class, the monies raised will be presented to the local COPE foundation. Many students also took part in the Hope Christmas Shoebox appeal. Students joined many others locally and nationally in filling shoe boxes with a variety of simple Christmas gifts based on the “four Ws” – something to write, something to wash, something to wear and wow! or treat. Organised nationally by Team Hope Ireland, the Shoebox appeal was facilitated as part of CSPE classes.

Mitchelstown CBS Under-14 hurlers started their county campaign in the best possible fashion with three wins from their three games played. They have now qualified as group winners for the county semi-final, to be played in the new year.

Mitchelstown CBS debating team recorded their second win in two outings when they emerged victors against their hosts from St. Aloysius Carrigtohill in the Concern National debate competition on Wednesday last.

A group of first and second year students at Mitchelstown CBS Secondary under the tutelage of their mentor Ms. Tara Carey provided the musical entertainment for shoppers in Mitchelstown on Wednesday and Friday last, all in the aid of the local Vincent de Paul.
